Each year we create new resolutions for ourselves– some realistic and others not so much. Whether the goal is to lose weight, step up your skills in the kitchen, or spend more time doing what makes you happy, St. Andrews Country Club wants to make them a reality. For those in need of a 2021 detox, St. Andrews’ Health & Nutrition Educator, Maureen Buchbinder, has you covered.
Unfortunately, our modern lifestyle exposes us to an increasingly complex and deteriorating environment, which affects our diet, and obviously our mind and body. Toxins cause obesity and inflammation where a detox cleanses and alkalinizes the body & improves absorption and assimilation of food. People who struggle with a lot of chronic health complaints and do not respond well to conventional therapies will undergo remarkable transformations on this detox plan. Bloating, constipation or diarrhea, food cravings, headaches, chronic fatigue, & heart disease will be lessened on the Detox program as well. Discover Maureen’s 5-part detox that will help start your year off even healthier.
1. Getting Rid of Toxins
Unloading our bodies and minds of common toxins gives us a healthy start. If you avoid toxic foods, you will feel energized, lose weight, and sleep better. Maureen advises that during the detox, avoid alcohol, caffeine (coffee, tea, sodas), corn, dairy products, meat, processed foods, or food additives, refined oils and hydrogenated fats (butter, margarine) sugar, artificial sweeteners, crackers, and cookies. No stimulants: diet pills and decongestants.
2. Fixing Your Gut
Healthy digestion and absorption are crucial for good health and proper detoxification. Diets can often be constricting; however, Maureen’s Detox Program offers an array of food options.
Here are foods you will eat:
-Brown rice, quinoa, & bulgar
-Filtered or Spring water
-Fish (especially sardines, wild salmon, sole, flounder, trout, and cod)
-Fruits: preferably organic and include lemon, do not eat more than 2-3/day
-Fresh vegetables: preferably organic & fresh vegetable broth
-Legumes: beans and lentils
3. Getting Your Fluids Moving
As part of an overall detoxification program, increasing circulation of blood and lymph throughout the body will refresh, oxygenate, and energize your cells. To improve circulation, Maureen recommends aerobic activity for 30 minutes, five times a week. Exercise will increase your heart rate, stimulate your body to release toxins, reduce inflammation, and increase intestinal elimination. It will allow the muscles to flush toxins that have built up in your tissues, and help burn off toxic stress chemicals like adrenaline and cortisol too.
4. Loving Your Liver and Sweating It Out
Exercise not only increases your heart rate, but it also increases sweating and toxin elimination through the skin and enhances the oxygenation of all your tissues. The liver is an essential part of break downs of toxins too, but by eliminating unhealthy foods and drinks such as alcohol you can maintain better overall health in such digestive organs.
5. Detox Your Heart, Mind, and Spirit
For a more relaxing experience try yoga, it will help purify your mind and the body as well as your spirit. Its benefits go far beyond just stretching and toning. The yoga poses will help relax your nervous system and increase circulation of blood to oxygenate your cells. St. Andrews’ members have also found it to also be a lot of fun to try with friends and family. As Maureen Buchbinder says, “stop, breathe, experience” this year and try something new.
