The weather in South Florida is perfect this time of year!
What better way to enjoy it than on a morning hike close by? Boca Raton is a city of dualities. New techniques meet old traditions. And a modern city lives alongside the untamed beauty of the wilds. Drive anywhere along East Boca, and you’ll find patches of these wild areas maintained by lovers of nature and protected from being built over. Take the time to step through these wild areas, and enjoy their unrefined gorgeous nature.
Blazing Star Nature Reserve
When you see Blazing Star Nature Reserve right next to Sugar Sand Park where it’s located, the smaller park may seem unassuming. Once you make your way around the mile-long trail loop, you’ll find that this area is a treasure trove of wildlife. The information booth up front tells you that the park is part scrubland, part dune, and all too important to Boca Raton’s ecosystem. Among the animals and plants that live here are gopher tortoises, eagles, and the blazing star flower that this park gets its name from.
Yamato Scrub Natural Area
Made from local conservationists’ efforts to preserve this rare piece of land, the Yamato Scrub Natural Area features both delicate scrub and beneficial pine flatwoods. Entering the park reveals how the animals and plants here live in a symbiotic relationship. For example, the Dade Pine houses the Scrub Jays that eat wood damaging bugs, rabbits eat invasive plants and fertilize the landscape, and zebra longwing butterflies pollinate the flowers that they feed from.
